Dr Robin Bates grew up in Sewanee, Tennessee and attended Carleton College. After two years as a journalist, he attended Emory University, writing his dissertation on the Scottish novelist Tobias Smollett. He taught for a year at Morehouse College and came to St. Mary’s College in 1981. He has published numerous academic articles on film, won two Fulbright awards to Slovenia, and self-published a book, How Beowulf Can Save America. He maintains a daily blog called Better Living through Beowulf. His three sons all attended St. Mary’s.
