For academic studying the rise of cli fi meme worldwide, Scott Thill's tweets are worth watchingh and studying and paying attention to. He's been using the #CliFi term in his own distinctive way in Wired magazine and again in a second piece in 2010, also in Wired magazine.

My name is Scott Thill, and I am not a number. I have labored as a
writer, journo, editor, coder and much more for Wired,
AlterNet, Salon and many, many more. Here is my full biography.
I was the first to inject cli-fi into the mainstream at Morphizm, Wired, AlterNet and more, but not nearly enough as I wanted. Back in 2009, I employed it as a portmanteau with deeper possibility, especially given the accelerating exhaustion of sci-fi. Despite my efforts, I couldn’t interest publications in greater explainers and conceptions. The argument that sci-fi was unstable and unsustainable, to say nothing of less interesting than cli-fi, was a pitch did not extend beyond the listicle.
That inevitably changed, as the predictable climate crisis worsened and sci-fi started to seriously suck. Cli-fi quickly infiltrated the market, yet despite this increasing popularity, it remains an underwhelming signifier creatively restrained by marketing, marooned from more influential meaning. Even today, its Wikipedia entry is narrowly restricted to the safe space of written fiction, an ironic judgment of a medium anchored to the souls of dead trees, in an Anthropocene of exponentially replicating transmedia.
My own transmedia replication evangelizes cli-fi’s wider ambitions, not just describing but advocating for more sustainable futures. Having helped bring cli-fi into being, and watched its development for years, I understand its strengths and weaknesses like few others. And as you will find reading through my overall Terror and Terraformation series, as well as Morphizm and my resume proper, I have open lines of communication to some of the most influential figures of our globally warmed time.
And so my analysis will be firmly anchored in more productive climate science and cultural production, featuring recognized names as well as underrepresented voices. Please continue to this proposal’s final page to meet some of them.
Cli-Fi is the Real, as sci-fi passes into memory, a capitalist anachronism exhausted by a self-fulfilling sixth mass extinction named specifically for it: The Anthropocene.
The Anthropocene’s mother tongue, cli-fi speaks of narratives and nations humanity has manufactured to re(de)fine nature for millennia. As they are constructed and discarded, on an astronomically lucky paradise melting beyond contemporary understanding and reproducing turbulent new abnormals in their place.
The first to deploy the term cli-fi in the mainstream, I’ve since transmitted its power to reshape how humanity will respond, maybe survive, the sixth mass extinction it has dumbly created. I have interviewed visionaries like Margaret Atwood and William Gibson and Alan Moore, and many more, about the triumphs and failures of our master narratives, upstart subtexts (and startups), (un)settled science, and hyperreal forces existing at the fringes of our known Real.
And now I am writing the book on it.
Cli-fi opens with the failure of science and its fiction, lost in capitalism’s translation and spoken with lethal consequence. Such as they are, and were, science and sci-fi have at our snapshot in time have achieved neither ambition or execution necessary to communicate Earth’s exponential devolution and devaluation.
Across time and space, science fiction has simply made it clear that we are the aliens, the invaders, the dead. Constructing and capitalizing upon these estranged modes of existence for which we are tragicomically unprepared, wrought by the technology and labor meant to free us, we have hurtled ourselves into the catastrophic Real in real-time.
For the Anthropocene’s final analysis, Big Science’s chief contribution seems to be extinction. Sick with visions of saviors and machines, our finest scientific minds have spent too much time, and money, rebooting civilizations their failed patriarchy couldn’t stop destroying. As global warming’s predictable yet exponential dystopia blossoms, the scientific establishment of Earth’s so-called superpowers spent more energy trying surviving their hyperproductive progress than hitting the off switch.
A diligent analysis of Big Science and sci-fi’s spectacular implosion may not be easy viewing, But it is here I will make the greater case.
