I loved the headline of the front page of the USA TODAY print newspaper last Monday, front page mind you: IT'S NOW OR NEVER ON STOPPING CLIMATE CHANGE

If not Cli-Fi, how? If not now, when?

James, well said. I like that line: ''If not Cli-Fi, how? If not now, when?''

Prophetic and Biblical cadence, without the superstition stuff. A climate prophet would say that, and you said it. BRAVO!

Joe Follansebee writes on his blog:

''Writers do not have to label work as ''cli fi'' for it to qualify as such. The term “cli fi ” goes back to 2008, when activist and public relations man Dan Bloom first suggested it as a way to classify certain climate-based stories. Several dozen books and movies have received the label. Of course, writers working before 2008 would not have used the term. (One of the earliest identified cli fi novels, The Drowned World, was published in 1962.) At present, the term is not widely accepted in the literary community, so writers probably shouldn’t use it when pitching new work to agents or publishers. Maybe someday…''

I've written one ''cli fi'' novel (unpublished, but I'm hopeful), and I've started a second. Climate change is fertile ground for the imagination, and I'm hopeful cli fi will go mainstream very soon.

I've written an amateur-sleuth mystery, "Death in a Hot Sea", that features an oceanographer who does climate change research. So far no literary agent has agreed to represent me, although they say things like "important project" and "mature writing". The book isn't science fiction or a thriller, which may be part of the problem. Can anyone help me? Thanks, Charlene
