まず最初に、寅さんを初めて見た時のお話を聞かせてください。
私は、日本に来る前、1994年から1997年までUCLAの学生でした。当時、日本のポップカルチャーは海外からも大変注目を集めていて、大学には「Japanese pop culture class」という講義までありました。そのクラスでは、映画や音楽など、日本のさまざまなポップカルチャーを紹介していて、そこで寅さん映画も紹介されたのです。授業で取り上げられたのは、寅さんがウィーンに行く回、第41作『寅次郎心の旅路』でした。
作品をご覧になって、いかがでしたか？
最初はとにかく、変な、おかしな映画だなあと思いました。strange old guyが、あちこちをうろついて、若い女性に会って、それからすったもんだがあって……。物語の終盤で、マドンナに彼氏がいることがわかって寅さんはフラレてしまうのですが、それも当然だろうと感じました。彼は歳を取り過ぎていて、変な老人と若い女性のカップルではあまりにも不釣りあいです。
あとになって、寅さんがマドンナに恋をしてフられるというのは、寅さんシリーズのお約束なんだということを知りましたが、当時はそんなことを知りませんから、変な映画だなあと思った記憶があります。
おそらく、みなさんもそう考えるかと思いますが、『寅次郎心の旅路』ははじめて見る寅さん映画としてはふさわしくないものだと思います。結局、授業で一度見ただけで、その後に別のシリーズ作品を見ることはありませんでした。

全作見終わって、記念館に行った時は嬉しかったですか？

その後、寅さんをあらためて見たのはいつ頃でしたか？
寅さんを本格的に好きになったのは、2度目に日本に来た時、ちょうど2014年のことです。寅さんの第1作をレンタルビデオで借りたことがきっかけでした。なぜそうしたかはもう思い出せませんが、もともと石原裕次郎など昭和のレトロな映画が好きなので、それでなんとなく寅さんを手にしたんだろうと思います。
久しぶりに見た寅さんはいかがでしたか？
『寅次郎心の旅路』の時とはまったく違う印象を受けました。第1作はもっとseriousな内容で、寅さんもまったくcrazy old guyではなかった。私が特に興味を覚えたのは、第1作で描かれる日本の家族や、社会についてのリアルな描写でした。
たとえば、さくらのお見合いを寅さんがぶち壊すシーンがありますよね？あのシーンには、都会に住む上流階級の人々と、寅さんのような下町出身の人々とのhierarchy（階層）が感じられました。言葉使い、話題、振る舞い、食べ方の違いなどから、そういったものが明確に伝わってきたのです。その後、とらやの家族が激しい喧嘩をするのですが、そこでもお互いに言いたいことをはっきりとぶつけあっていて、とてもrealityのある日本の描写が印象深かったのです。
第1作には、『寅次郎心の旅路』にあった、変な映画、silly movieという印象がありませんでした。リアルな日本の描写も含めて、いろいろな意味のある映画だと興味深く見たことを覚えています。

ジェイサンさんにとっての寅さんシリーズの魅力を教えてください。
自由気ままな寅さんへのあこがれとか、コメディ的な要素とか、いろいろ楽しみがあると思いますが、私はあの映画で描かれている、日本の文化的な側面にとても興味があります。
たとえば、私の大好きな『寅次郎ハイビスカスの花』では、米軍基地が劇中に登場し、リリーが米兵向けの店で仕事を探すシーンがあります。当時の沖縄の人々と米軍の関係性がしっかりと描かれているのです。また、初期作品では街角に自動販売機はありませんが、シリーズ後半になるとどこにでも自動販売機が見られるようになります。私は、シリーズのどの作品から街角に自動販売機が登場するのか、探したりもしましたよ（笑）。
寅さん映画が製作された1969年から1997年は、日本が劇的に変わっていった時代と重なると思うのですが、その頃の変化に富んだ日本の姿を、長い時間をかけてリアルに記録した日本映画は他にないのです。そこにものすごく大きな価値がありますし、私が魅力を感じるところでもあります。
備中高橋に行った時には、寅さん好きのタクシー運転手から、備中高梁で撮影された2作品には、まったく同じアングルから列車を撮影しているシーンがあると聞きました。1971年の作品（『寅次郎恋歌』）ではSLが走っていましたが、1983年の作品（『口笛を吹く寅次郎』）では電車が走っているのです。山田洋次はあえて同じアングルから撮影することで、移り変わりを強調したかったのだと思います。
第6作『純情篇』では、寅さんのsales pitch（売り文句）を録音している人がいましたよね。寅さんのような伝統的なテキ屋稼業がこの先長くなく、もはや学術的な記録対象として捉えられつつある、ということをちゃんと描いている。おそらく山田洋次は、意図的に、そういった日本の姿を作品の中に落とし込もうと思っていたのでしょう。

寅さんを見ると、日米文化間の「ギャップ」よりも、「共通点」「普遍性」を感じる。
寅さんを見て、アメリカと日本の文化的ギャップを感じることはありますか？
うーん、ギャップですか……。ギャップは、あまり感じないかな。むしろ寅さんを見て、アメリカ人も日本人も根本は同じなんだなって、共通している部分を感じますよね。
それはどういうことですか？
日本人に対する一般的なstereotypeとして、「自分の意見を言わない」「奥ゆかしい」「よそよそしい」みたいなものがあると思います。でも、寅さんに描かれている人々はみんなそうじゃない。自分の意見をはっきりいうし、家族同士で激しい喧嘩もする。実際に私が来日してから接した日本の人々も、みなさんそうでした。だから、寅さんを見ると、「なんだ、日本人も根本のところはアメリカ人と同じなんだな」と感じるのです。
小津安二郎の映画は、外国人のイメージする「日本」に近い、typicalな日本映画という感じがします。一方、山田洋次については「ああ、あのsillyな映画を撮る人でしょ？メロドラマの作家でしょ？」という反応をする外国人もいるけど、私はそうは思わない。realityある「日本」の姿と、人間の普遍的な部分を描いている作家だと思うのです。
『寅次郎心の旅路』で、寅さんはウィーンの日々を振り返り、結局「地球上、いずこも同じ」と言いますが、あれはとても象徴的なシーンです。他にも、マドンナの中にはクリスチャンも数人いますし、第48作のラストシーンは日本のお祭りではなくコリアンフェスティバルで締めくくられます。多少の違いはあっても、人間の根本はまったく一緒なんだよ、というのを山田洋次は寅さんシリーズを通して表現していると思うんですよね。
だから、「寅さんのどこに文化的なギャップを感じるか？」というのはあまりよくない質問ですね。「どこに共感できるか？どこが一致してるか？」と考える方が自然な感じがします。自分が英語を教える時もやはりそう考えていて、ギャップよりも、お互いに近いところ、似てるところ、それを理解しあうために言葉があるのではと思っています。
違いよりも同じところに着目しよう、人間は根本ではみんな一緒なのだ、そういう思想が山田洋次作品にはあると思います。そこが彼の素晴らしいところですね。
「寅さん」のニュアンスを正確に英語にし、アメリカ人にその魅力を広めたい
寅さんを見ていて理解できないところなどはありませんか？
寅さんには、日本の古いpoemやstoryがよくでてきますが、そこはやはり外国人にはわからないと感じますね。
あとは、言葉の微妙な「ニュアンス」のところ。寅さんの言葉を直訳すれば「意味」は伝わりますが、下町言葉とインテリ言葉の違いだったり、寅さんの古めかしいものの言い方のおかしさなどは、今の英語翻訳では伝えきれていないかなと思います。寅さんのニュアンスを理解して、英語に置き換えるのは相当に難しい作業ですから。
ジェイサンさんが、それに挑戦するというのはいかがですか？
そうですね。私の夢のひとつに、「寅さんの魅力をアメリカの人に伝える」というものがあります。寅さんの言葉のニュアンスや、作品の味わいを英語で伝えるのはすごく難しそうだし、どうやったらいいかまったく見当もつきませんが、いつかはtryしてみたいと考えていますよ。
